With the UFC bigger than ever, and Strikeforce,Bellator and DREAM closely behind. I think it is important to recognize the local MMA promotions that allow the other 99% of the athletes to compete and make a name for themselves. Organizations such as Extreme Challenge and XFO have been around for years and have developed a number of top level talent that you have seen in the larger organizations. And while these smaller shows may not be held in giant venues and be televised on TV, they are a incredible value, with often close to the same level of talent. Just last month for instance fans had the opportunity to watch former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver fight for the XFO. Now if you tried to get a front row ticket to watch Jens fight for the WECor UFC, you would have had to spend thousands of dollars. However that night, you could have been front row for less than 100.00 to see a true legend of MMAfight live. And this is just one example. All of these top level fighters come from somewhere, and that somewhere is the local MMA shows. So next time you have the chance to see a local show, seize the opportunity. You will not be disappointed. In the area I am from personally, XFOis one of the longest running local shows...here are just some of the names off the top of my head that have fought for them.

Jeff Curran,Chael Sonnen, Bart Palaszewski, Clay Guida, Matt Hamil, Roger Huerta,Patrick Curran, Matt Fiordirosa, Jens Pulver, John Hosman, Chase Beebe, Rapheal Assuncao, Eric Schafer, Rory Markham, and many more.

I really appreciate the smaller shows and it gives me a great idea of who is going to make a statement and be a future star. But there should be a lot more emphasis on the local fighters in Alabama. Fighters like Matt Brown out of Jasper, and Michael Messer who has torn threw everyone around Birmingham. The only problem is there is no MMA sanctioning body in Alabama. Just a boxing commission, which means the local events arent posted on mixedmartialarts.com. Therefore all the hard work these men put in goes unrecognized. I think that you promoters out there should really look in on some of these guys. I see greatness in some of them. Just waiting to shine.

Sincerely, Jennifer Brookshire
